UK Work Permits and Visa Sponsorship - What Employers Need

At Renaix, we regularly work with global professionals who are considering relocation or have already relocated, and we recognise the experience and skills they can bring. At the same time, we recognise that for employers unfamiliar with the system, visa sponsorship may seem complex or uncertain.

To Help Clarify the Key Steps and Considerations, We’ve Created a Brief Guide Designed To Support Hiring Teams in Making Informed Decisions

What Is a Sponsor Licence?

To employ most non-UK nationals, a company must hold a sponsor licence issued by the UK Home Office. This licence allows employers to sponsor workers under routes such as the Skilled Worker visa.
There is an application fee (currently £536 for small companies and £1,476 for larger ones), and the licence is valid for four years. While it does require some upfront administration, it enables access to a broader talent pool, which is beneficial for specialist roles that are hard to fill locally.

Key Work Visa Routes to Be Aware Of

  1. Skilled Worker visa – The main route for long-term employment in approved roles, including finance, audit, and IT. Requires sponsorship.
  2. Scale-up visa – Suited to high-growth companies. Starts with sponsorship but offers more flexibility later.
  3. Graduate visa – For recent international graduates from UK universities. Doesn’t require sponsorship; useful for entry-level or trainee positions.
  4. Global Talent visa – A route for senior professionals with recognised expertise. No sponsorship is required, but endorsement is needed.
  5. Health and Care Worker visa – A streamlined Skilled Worker route for health and social care professionals.

Why Might Employers Be Cautious?

We often hear concerns about cost, compliance, or administrative burden. While these are valid considerations, the process can be structured and managed with proper support in place. For many employers, particularly those filling niche or senior roles, the benefits of accessing international talent can outweigh the effort involved.

Professionals Already Sponsored in the UK

It’s also worth noting that many skilled professionals are already living and working in the UK under Skilled Worker visas—often employed by large multinational firms, including Big Four consultancies. When circumstances change (e.g., the end of a contract), these individuals typically have a 60-day window to find a new sponsor.
Transferring sponsorship in such cases is generally straightforward, provided the new employer holds a valid sponsor licence.
This can be an effective route for employers seeking to hire experienced candidates who are already established in the UK and can typically begin work quickly.

Sponsoring a Candidate Already in the UK

Steps include

– Holding a valid sponsor licence (or applying for one)
– Issuing a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)
– The candidate applying to update their visa with the new employer’s details

Processing times usually range from 3 to 8 weeks, and typical costs include

– Certificate of Sponsorship: £239–£525 per worker. Home Office updated fee list via Employment Law World View.
– Immigration Skills Charge: £364/year (small) or £1,000/year (large) via gov.uk.
– Sponsor licence: £536 (small) / £1,476 (large) via connaughtlaw.com.
This pathway can suit employers looking to fill mid-to-senior roles efficiently, with candidates often ready to hit the ground running.

Did You Know?

– Over 300,000 Skilled Worker visas were granted in 2024
– More than 50,000 UK employers currently hold a sponsor licence
– Finance and accounting remain high-demand sectors for skilled sponsorship
