Operations manager CV, template & examples
A lot of job applicants usually have multiple versions of their CV ready at any given point in time. This is a strategy that could prove useful for diverse roles like operations manager. This does not mean that the candidate needs to prepare totally different CVs, but rather that the points that are highlighted and stressed upon must be different. For example, if the candidate is applying to a role where the job requires leading a large team of professionals, it might make sense to dedicate more space on the CV talking about leadership experiences. Whereas if the role requires operational optimisation, then experience in that field should be stressed upon.
While this is true for most job roles, it is indispensable for roles which are as diverse as operational management. Another thing to make note of is that applications for roles which are more technical and require a lot of preplanning would benefit from highlighting any courses or certifications covering those aspects. Whereas applications for roles which require the operations manager to be on the floor or in the field would benefit more from highlighting the on-the-ground work experience.
Examples of CV points
Here are some examples of the type of bullet points that can be put on the CV of an operations manager:
Leadership skill is something that is hard to define numerically but one strategy that is often used is to specify the number of direct or indirect reports. For example, rather than stating that the operations manager led a team of executives it might be better to specifically state the number of people in the team. This usually works better even if the team is as small as two or three people.
This is another great opportunity for an operations manager to objectively state the impact that they had on their departments. Examples of efficiency metrics include things like a reduction in working capital, reduction in error rates or defects, risk reduction in business processes, more efficient use of manpower and so on.
The operations manager’s contribution to safety could perhaps be measured by a percentage reduction in errors or mishap. This could perhaps be followed by the work done on the safety policy or any special initiatives taken.
Again, a numerical value could be provided for the cost savings resulting from operational improvements. Rather than percentages, it would be a lot more eye-catching to put a monetary value to the savings. The specific initiatives which led to the savings can then be defined in some detail.
These are just some examples and candidates should choose a combination of such points based on the specific requirements of the role that they’re applying to.
Use your KPI’s for inspiration
If the candidate is still struggling to figure out but can be included on the CV, a quick look at your key performance indicators (KPIs) might be of help. Many candidates use the numbers from their annual reviews on their CVs. Of course, any confidential or proprietary information should not be shared.
